Listening to OST’s

That’s the new habit which is growing gradually on me now a days.

I couldn’t  stop myself writing this after watching Wes anderson’s Rushmore. Oh boy, that’s what you call an OST. Even his other movie I have seen, The darjeeling limited had some wonderful sound tracks taken from Satyajeet ray’s movies.

Coming to main point now, in Indian cinema, the background score was not treated as important feature till recently. Its getting its due only from few years.

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja was master at giving mind blowing background score. But it was rahman’s scores which made even the OST’s a popular thing with bombay theme and some others.

For me, it started with the movie Hotel rwanda. It had some amazing african chanting by kids that stayed even after the movie was finished. I tried to find it online but invain. Then came Giuseppe tornatore’s Italian classic Cinema paradiso with the music by lengendary composer  Ennio morricone (remember the theme of  The good, the bad and the ugly ?). The beautiful movie was taken to the next level by the music given by him. Since the OST was very famous, I got hold of it very easily.

This is a video of Ennio morricone performing the theme of Cinema pardiso in a concert-

One of the other brilliant OST that blew me away was from Stanley kubrick’s 2001: A space odyssey. It has unarguably one of the best theme music ever. He has mostly used existing music rather than creating separately for the movie (extensive use of  classical music ). All of his movies consists of extremely intriguing musical pieces .

The opening scene from the movie –

That made me dig more deep into several other OST’s . I found a collection of OST’s from various movies, listening to them is really a different kind of experience. Then I found Quentin tarantino’s movies like Reservoir dogs, Kill bill Vol 1, Vol 2, Pulp fiction. They all boast some kick-ass soundtracks.

I wish that we  could see more OST’s releasing from Indian cinema in the similar lines of  Rahman’s The Fire, Monty sharma’s Black , Indian ocean’s Black friday and even Raincoat.

And since Rahman has already made it big with winning prestigious Golden globe nomination for original music for the must- watch movie  Slumdog millionare , I  wish him ALL THE BEST. Waiting for the good news on Jan 11🙂
